1st AECEF International Symposium

The Association of European Civil Engineering Faculties (AECEF) is preparing its first international symposium, to be held in Prague in fall 1995. The general topic of the Symposium is "Education for Civil and Environmental Engineering and Surveying".
The aim of the Symposium is to create a forum for sharing and exchanging experience among university teachers, research workers and those engaged in the building industry who take an interest in problems of study systems and study programmes for civil engineering. The symposium will concentrate on the compatibility of European systems of educating civil engineers, on the requirements for civil engineers at various stages of the buikJing process, the development of the system of education for the 21 st century, and developments in the building industry and its influence on the education of civil engineers.
The themes of the Symposium will be:
formulating the basic requirements for the education of civil engineers in the first decade of the 2lst century; formulating a civil engineers' harter
recommendations for European studies within the framework of AECEF member universities, compatibility of civil engineering study programmes, comparision of curricula and length of study, systems and structure of study, requirements for civil engineering graduates, academic degrees; ec.;
the influence of social, economic, and legal factors on civil engineering study programmes, the teaching of economics and social sciences, their role in the education of civil engineers;
requirements for the education of civil engineers in engineering information science and environmental engineering;
a prognosis of developments and major tendencies in building research after the year 2000, reliability of structures, new demands on structures;
the consequences of global geopolitical changes on the development of civil engineering education.
The conclusions and recommendations of the Symposium will be placed at the disposal of the relevant governmental and non-governmental organizations in the field of civil engineering.
Contributions to the topics of the Symposium will be published in the Symposium Proceedings. The symposium will be organized in the form of plenary sessions and discussions in specialized sections. The language of the Symposium will be English. Study tours and social activities will be organized for Symposium participants and accompanying persons.
The First General Assembly of the AECEF will be held in conjunction with the Symposium. It will consider the previous activities of the AECEF so far, and discuss the further development of the Association.
The first announcement and call for papers for the Symposium will soon be available for all AECEF members and other persons interested in the topic of the Symposium.
